The YouTube Candidate

I was listening to Mr. Tony yesterday (a.k.a. “The T.K.-Man from D.C. Town” or “T.K. StackMoney”) and he mentioned something that I hadn’t really put a lot of thought into until now. His point was that for the first time in a very long time, due to the evolution of technology, that the political process (namely the Presidential election) is going to take on a very different and personal tone.

With the advent of YouTube we are seeing the ability for anyone to broadcast a message to anyone else in the world, with internet access, for no real cost. The release earlier this week of the Hillary Clinton Sopranos Parody is a prime example of how politicians and those in their camp can craft messages that can be readily accessed on personal level through home/work/portable computers. Almost every serious politician thus far that has declared to run for President in ’08 has made some sort of substantive “viral” (I know what you are thinking but that was the other Clinton) contribution from their campaign. Barack Obama has several videos including one where he invites donors to possibly win an evening with him for dinner.

With the ability to sit in the comfort of your own home (by yourself or with friends/family) and watch a screen (your computer) where a politician or talking head is going to speak like they are talking directly to you, you are not going to be able to help but feel like there is some kind of abstract personal connection. Gone are the days of watching politicians make big press announcements (they will still make them) and having that be the only interaction with the general public. Now with viral videos and online political ‘webisodes’ people are going to have more access to tune in to their favorite candidate just as they would their favorite TV program.

Needless to say this is going to be just one of the factors that are going to make the ’08 Presidential one to watch!
